Meta sells the ad, runs the conversation it starts, and now sells the agent that closes the sale

TL;DR

Meta announced its Enterprise Platform on September 28. It includes Business Agent, which answers questions, qualifies leads, books appointments and closes sales inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram threads, and over a million businesses already use it. A free small-business version of Muse connects to Shopify, Stripe and a company's Meta ad accounts. For a small business, the ad, the inbound conversation and the lead qualification can now come from one vendor. Meta has not published a price, a named launch customer or a close rate.

Meta announced its Enterprise Platform on September 28, and most of the coverage lined it up against Microsoft Copilot, Salesforce Agentforce and OpenAI. That comparison is fair for the enterprise buyer. For the small business that already advertises on Meta, the more relevant comparison is with the person they would otherwise hire to answer the messages.

The platform has four parts: Muse, Meta’s general-purpose agent; Muse API; Muse Code; and Business Agent. Business Agent is the one that touches revenue. Meta says it can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify leads and close sales across its messaging apps. Over one million businesses were already using it on WhatsApp and Messenger, and Meta says its apps carry more than a billion active customer threads a day.

The ad and the inbox belong to the same company

A small business that runs Meta ads already gets its leads in Meta’s inbox. Until now, a person on the business side had to read those messages, decide which ones were real and reply before the lead went cold. Business Agent does that work, and it lives in the same product family as the ad that produced the message.

The free version makes the connection tighter. Muse for Small Business is free with usage limits and connects to Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Slack and the company’s Instagram, Facebook Pages and ad accounts. Sales data, marketing data and ad spend sit inside one assistant, and the assistant is built by the company selling the ads.

Lead qualification is the job in the way

I spent years selling software that sat between an ad click and a sales conversation. The handoff between the two was where most leads got lost: the form went to the wrong queue, the follow-up came two days late, the qualifying question got asked by someone who did not know the product. Putting both halves under one vendor removes the handoff. It also removes the second vendor who used to get paid for managing it.

Business Agent will not handle everything. A discount that needs a manager, a buyer with three stakeholders, a deal that turns on a custom term: those still need a person. Two things can be true here. A small business owner who was losing leads to slow replies will probably come out ahead, and a lot of what an inside sales rep spent the day on is now a feature.

Who owns the transcript

The coverage says Business Agent connects to hundreds of systems, and the sources I read name Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee. If a sale is qualified, negotiated and closed inside a WhatsApp thread run by Meta’s agent, the question for every CRM and sales-engagement vendor is whether that conversation ever shows up in their system, or whether their record shows a customer who appeared from nowhere with an order attached.

For anyone who sells inbound tooling, that is worth raising with a customer this week. Ask where the transcript lives, who can export it and whether a rep can read it before calling the buyer.

What Meta has not said

Meta has not disclosed pricing for the platform, named a launch customer or published a close rate for Business Agent. It recruited former MongoDB CEO Chirantan Desai as chief enterprise platform officer, reporting to Zuckerberg, who called the platform the next major pillar of the business. Muse itself has 2.5 million downloads since September 8, according to Techloy, which is a consumer number and says little about whether businesses will let an agent close their sales.

If you sell to small businesses, ask your next prospect who answers their WhatsApp messages. If you buy this, ask Meta for the close rate before you sign anything. Pricing, a named customer and a close rate are the three numbers that turn this from an announcement into a product, and none of them is public yet.
